Koryu Dai San
  • Uke and tori collect their weapons and take up a position to begin the kata
  • Uke is to the left of tori as they face Sensei
  • Uke and tori hold their weapons in their right hand and advance to center of testing area.
  • Each carries their weapons neatly with the blades downward and the tips pointing forward
  • Uke and tori take a position centered on the mat approximately 18' feet apart
  • They bow to Sensei then turn and bow to each other
  • They return to their corners, kneel and place their weapons neatly in the mat.
  • The blades of the weapons should face inwards and the handles should be to the right.
  • The order of weapons are tanto, bokken, jo with the tanto being the closest in and the jo being the furthest out
  • Uke and tori rise together and return to their positions on the mat, facing each other
  • Uke and tori advance via tsugi-ashi with three steps until they are approximate 4' apart
  • Uke and tori kneel and uki slides forward to correct the distance as needed

    • Right stance: Strike with a men cut (raise bokken above the head and advance towards tori, striking down on the crown of tori's head with the tip of the bokken)

    • Block the cut with the blade of the right hand, over uke's arms, while swinging the left foot back about 45 degrees
    • Grasp the middle of the handle of the bokken (between uke's hands) then push forwards and downwards while keeping the arm straight and stepping forward slightly with right foot

    • Support the bokken with left hand by resting the blade between the thumb and left index finger

    • Uke attacks tori from left stance. Hold the jo with the left hand near the middle of the jo and the right hand approximately 6" from the tip. Grasp palm down with both thumbs pointing towards uke
    • Attack tori by crossing the right foot in front of the left, then stepping again with the left foot.
    • For techniques 1 - 4, thrust directly at tori's belt simultaneously with the left foot
    • For the fifth technique, raise the jo to chest level on the crossing step with the right foot then thrust at tori's right collar bone simultaneously with left foot

    • Attack tori by crossing the right foot in front of the left, then stepping again with the left foot
    • For all techniques, thrust directly at tori's belt simultaneously with the left foot

    • Swing tip of jo round to the left and lock

    • Raise the top of the jo and step forward slightly with right foot about 45 degrees
    • Break uke's balance by thrusting upwards (keep jo over uke's head)

    • Release the jo when it is overhead
    Tori

    • Continue to sweep over and down uke's back then strike the ankles horizontally
    Uke

    • Jump over jo and backfall just before jo strikes
    Tori

    • Keep posture and continue sweeping
    • End with jo in veritical position and drop to left knee at the same time
    • Continue to grasp jo with both hands at the end of the techinque

    Part F: Tachi Tai Tachi
    • After completing final Jo No Bu (2) technique, tori returns the jo to uke and both return to starting position
    • Uke returns to weapons corner, kneels, replaces the jo and straightens gi
    • Uke picks up the bokken and returns to the original position holding the bokken against the left hip with the left hand, blade edge up (as if the bokken was sheathed)
    • At the same time that uke is obtaining the bokken, tori returns to weapons corner, kneels and straightens gi
    • Tori picks up the bokken and returns to the original position holding the bokken against the left hip with the left hand, blade edge up (as if the bokken was sheathed)
    • Tori and uke simultaneously "draw" their bokken with right hand and assumes a position of Seigan

    • Right stance: Men cut
    Tori

    • Right stance: Respond simultaneously with uke's strike with a men cut
    • Strike slightly from the right, striking uke's bokken to deflect it - strike with side of bokken, not the edge

    • Relax and drop the tip of the bokken to the height of tori's shoulder
    • Step back with tsuki-ashi and assume Seigan

    • Raise the tip of the bokken slightly and aim towards uke's left wrist

    • Retreat with tsugi-ashi and maintaining Seigan about two steps back so that the tip of uke's bokken will meet tori's when uki lowers the bokken

    • Advance in tsugi-ashi about 2 or 3 more steps

    • Continue to move forward in tsugh-ashi after completing cut about 2 or 3 steps, keeping bokken horizontal

    • Face in the direction of the movement, not towards each other
    • Face each other by pivoting counter clockwise on both feet and assuming Seigan

    • Right stance: Sidestep with right foot to the left and slightly back
    • Deflect uke's cut with the flat of the blade at the same time
    • Bring the tip of the bokken to the center and cut at Uke's wrist
    • The movements of the bokken are sharp and small

    • Move in from of tori and assume Seigan

    • Lower posture while stepping forward with left foot and assume Hasso stance (tsuba [or guard] near the mouth, elbows nearly horizontal)

    • At the same time, lower posture while stepping back with right foot and assume Waki Gamae stance (Left hand in front and just below belt, tip of bokken pointing backwards at the mat in order to disguise its length)
    • Step forward with right foot and cut at tori's left thigh from the outside
    Tori

    • Step back with left foot bringing bokken straight down to the center in order block uke's cut with the side of the bokken
    Uke

    • Slide bokken under and up, edge facing the right (do not loose contact with tori's bokken).
    • Thrust at tori's chest while stepping forward with left foot
    Tori

    • Take a big step back with the right and deflect uke's thrust with a slight push outwards while turning the body slightly to the right (clockwise)
    Uke

    • Lower the tip of the bokken slightly then thrust at tori's chest with the edge pointing to the left and while steping forward with right foot at the same time

    • Take a big step back with the left and deflect uke's thrust with a slight push outwards while turning the body slightly to the left (counter clockwise)

    • Step forward with the left foot and bring the bokken round to the left in order to cut tori's right neck

    • Step back with right foot and block uke's cut with the side of the bokken, edge sloping downwards and tip point to the left
